Surgical Treatment of Pectum Excavatum

Thoracoplasty by Abramson’s technique

This minimally invasive surgery is performed on a patient with congenital pectum excavatum in the operating room under general anesthesia. The operating team includes a surgeon, 3 assistants and a surgical nurse.

A surgeon with assistants makes two approaches 3 cm each on each side of the medium axillary line and performs tunneling in sub-muscular layer through the highest deformation points on both sides; inserts a correcting titanic bar to two ribs on each side with its positioning and fixation. In severe deformation cases sternotomy and costotomy are performed.

Indications: congenital pectum excavatum I-II in a child with strong rigidity; unwillingness of a patient (parents) to take conservative treatment.

Service duration: from 80 to 150 minutes (excluding anesthesia).

Terms of service provision

Age restrictions: children after 4 years to 14 years.

Contraindications: heart defects requiring surgical treatment, blood clotting disorders; osteogenesis imperfecta and other diseases with bone fragility, rigid deformity forms.
